Shifting wind direction is responsible for the "star dune" formations around the Sossusvlei area of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. These dunes tend to be radially symmetrical with a peak at the centre of several trailing arms or ridges. Because the wind can assail them from all directions, these dunes tend to grow upward rather than outward making them among the highest in the world.
