The Worlds Greatest Density of Floral Species is in the Cape

September 03, 2012

The Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa is home to the highest density of plant species of any of the six great floral kingdoms around the globe. Covering just 44,000 sq. kilometers, the tiny Cape Floral Kingdom has over 9000 species of plants, over 6200 being endemic and is famous for its many species of unique fynbos, which account for around 80% of the plant diversity. This tiny but super-diverse area boasts a greater density of plant species than the Rain Forests of the Amazon basin.
